Perhaps his years on the right side of the law have really made him soft. Nothing in this book required the SSR, and, in truth, he never appeared in more than name. C'mon, the old rat never worried about money - he just robbed a bank when he needed more. I should have been warned off by the fact that the first part of the book, Jim's biggest worry is his dwindling bank balance. Along the way they visit a pair of planets, which have vaguely interesting setups that could have led to an entire book earlier, but are now dealt with perfunctorily. The overarching plot that is supposed to tie the book together is the problem of relocating his bumpkin relatives and their porcine herd. Our rat is almost unrecognizable - no larceny, no cons, no jobs for the Special Branch, not even any real cleverness. I've long enjoyed tales of the Stainless Steel Rat, but this book just disappointed me all around.

But their location near town makes their lifestyle much easier.īonnie and Sam arrived in late spring and began cutting trees, stripping logs, and built a rustic cabin home before winter arrived. A funny side note, my sister and her husband have built a cabin home in Sterling and love it there. They searched for property until they came upon land on Caribou Island in remote Skilak Lake near Sterling, Alaska. So in 1980, at thirty-six years of age for Sam and twenty-five for Bonnie, they sold their home and packed up for the long drive to Alaska. They started out with a traditional town life, but Sam had a dream of living off the land in Alaska. Bonnie was a city girl, but Sam grew up on a farm where he learned how to hunt and became a jack-of-all-trades. Bonnie and her husband Sam were from Ohio. Winds of Skilak: A Tale of True Grit, True Love and Survival in the Alaskan Wilderness is the memoir of Bonnie Rose Ward. I’d read most of the other titles on her winter reading list, but this book about Alaskan wilderness living was new to me. A friend of mine, Vicky, recommended this book on her blog Tramps Camp. The authors own anger and sorrow at Palestines tragedy and his acquaintance with the absurdities of Israeli politics (he was once a member of Israels parliament himself) are here transmuted into satire both biting and funny. An informer for the Zionist state, his stupidity, candor, and cowardice make him more of a victim than a villain but in a series of tragicomic episodes, he is gradually transformed from a disaster-haunted, gullible collaborator into a Palestinian-no hero still, but a simple man intent on survival and, perhaps, happiness. Saeed is the comic hero, the luckless fool, whose tale tells of aggression and resistance, terror and heroism, reason and loyalty that typify the hardships and struggles of Arabs in Israel. Book Synopsis This contemporary classic, the story of a Palestinian who bes a citizen of Israel, combines fact and fantasy, tragedy and comedy. From there on, the sense that strange forces are at play only grows with one inexplicable event after another. In her stories, Nelvana is the daughter of Koliak, King of the Northern Lights, and an unnamed mortal woman. Like all superheroes, Nelvana has two origins, one her canon origin, and the other her historical origin. Then frustrated, as her adventures have been out of print since her last appearance in 1947. I’m a nerd, a feminist, and an avid fan of Arctic literature so I was incredibly shocked that I never heard of her before, and I became completely captivated. Besides that, she was also one of the earliest comic-book SuperWomen, predating Wonder Woman by several months. She was a fierce protector of the North who used her superpowers to fight exploiters of the Arctic, from Nazis to interdimensional space invaders. Six years ago, I first heard of Nelvana of the Northern Lights, an Inuit demigoddess printed in comic books across Canada during WWII. The book literally begins with a tone of “Why I am right and everyone is wrong” – because I gave simple questions to a lot of people and they all got it wrong. I just finished this book yesterday and to be honest, I have mixed feelings of what this book talks about. But we come to really dislike her because she hates London on site. She’s tough on the outside and clearly harbors no love lost or even emotion towards Crewe for reasons that we don’t yet know. He’s got an army of men who protect him, and woman who is his partner, and that term is strictly business. Joseph should have known that trying to pay with counterfeit money wouldn’t go over well, and now London, his sister pays the price for it.Ĭrewe we learn throughout this story is a man with a dark dark past – it takes most of the story to get to the crux of it, but essentially, he feels that his revenge is worth being so hard. As all powerful semi illegal men are in these stories, if you cross him, then you pay with your life or that of someone close to you. In this story we have Crewe, our leading man, a powerful man – who runs a scotch empire sure, but who trades intelligence for a price. They’re intertwined at times, but still quite unique and really dark, seedy and hot. I really do enjoy the worlds that our author Penelope Sky creates for us. Now I’ll take something from him-something irreplaceable.īut even when Joseph doubles the amount of money he owes me, I don’t give her up. He took my intelligence without paying for it.
